Review and Abstract

Reviews & Abstracts

The Reviews and Abstracts section of the Journal has, like Topsy, ‘growed and growed’, and is occupying an ever increasing proportion of the available space. The editorial team has received many favourable comments from readers regarding this part of the journal and we are grateful to those who took the trouble to express their views.

In this issue, readers will find that the web page address for the English language journals that we have been scanning since 1996 is given, together with the editor's thoughts regarding the facility with which the pages can be accessed. The contents of the web-page now form the basis for this issue's (and our previous issue) current awareness section.

From the start of Volume 28 (2001) only the web page address for these journals will be given, and it is hoped that readers will ‘book-mark’ these on their PC and follow-up the journals as they wish.

We will continue to publish the contents of the foreign language journals' and the Australian Orthodontic Journal as and when we receive copy, and will continue the occasional reviews from other journals—at least until the editorial team changes later in 2001. The new team will obviously make its own decisions on structure and content of the journal.

Book and software reviews will continue as usual, as will publication of the UTG abstracts from the British Orthodontic Conference.

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORTHODONTICS http://www3.oup.eo.uk/eortho/

This easy to use site has the Table of Contents and Abstracts for each volume since 1996, and the full text of each article from Volume 19 (1997) onwards is available on-line to subscribers. Abstracts of the articles are available without subscription. The publishers will also e-mail the Table of Contents to you for each new issue on request and on receipt of your e-mail address. All this can be done through the web-page.

ANGLE ORTHODONTIST http://www.angleorthodontist.org/

This is another easy to use web site. It gives Table of Contents of articles from Volume 66 (1996) to the current issue. Clicking on the blue coloured title of the article gives the abstract, as well as other information such as the author's address and dates of submission and acceptance of the article. It is a pity that the web-page is not kept up to date, as, on the day of inspection (early July), the advertised ‘Current Issue’ was No 6, 1999, whereas, on the same day, the first issue of 2000 was already in the library of the Dental School in Cardiff.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ORTHODONTICS AND DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPEDICS http://www.mosby.com

This is also an easy site to navigate. Click on ‘Periodicals’ from the home page, then click on ‘Find a Journal’ (Name), then click on AJODO and finally click on Current Issue. Everything loads quickly, and you are straight onto the contents of the current issue. Clicking on ‘Abstract’ brings up the abstract of the article as well as other helpful information such as the postal and e-mail address for reprint requests.

THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ADULT ORTHODONTICS AND ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY gttp://www.quintpub.com/index.html

This is a difficult site to navigate, and is quite slow compared with previous sites. You need to click on ‘Journals’ on the horizontal bar at the top of the home page. This brings you to another page where you can ‘Search All Journals’. To use this you have to know the author +/- key word as well as the journal. To access the journal to browse the contents you must scroll down the page and click on the journal's icon. On the next page you then have to move to the yellow window on the left of the screen and click on ‘Current Table of Contents’, etc., and finally click on ‘Abstract’ to read the detail.

The site seems mildly disorganized in that there are two links to issue 1 of 2000, and for 1999, the list of issues is not in numerical order. They do, however, have a list of contents going all the way back to Volume 1 (1986), with very crude abstracts of the papers. More recent volumes have a full abstract.

JOURNAL OF CLINICAL ORTHODONTICS http://www.jco-online.com

The Journal has only recently become available in an electronic format, and so their previous issues library only starts in April 2000. The initial graphic is good value and it is worth visiting the site just to watch the correction of a malocclusion.

The format is different to other journal's pages as the abstract is given without having to ask for it, but there is no mechanism to allow you to copy and paste the content pages, hence the empty space that follows.
