Reviews and Abstract

Reviews and Abstracts

R. G. Oliver

As promised in the last issue, the web-page addresses of all the traditional journals are now given, without listing each article. Almost all the journals provide not only a list of titles, authors and their place of work, but they will also provide an abstract of the article to non-subscribers. This is a better service than that we can provide through the journal.

European Journal of Orthodontics:

http://www3.oup.co.uk/eortho/e

Angle Orthodontist:

http://www.angleorthodontist.org/

American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics

The International Journal of Adult Orthodontics and Orthognathic Surgery

We will continue to list the contents of journals from sister publications from around the world, as and when they become available.

World Journal of Orthodontics.

2000, Volume 1, Issue 1

This is a new orthodontic journal, edited by Tom Graber (where does this man find all his energy?)

He justifies the introduction of yet another orthodontic journal by describing his policy. The journal is to be published in paper format 4 times per year, although it will also be on the web. It has many colour illustrations, and keeps Tables and Statistical tests to a minimum (promising that these will be available in full on the on-line version). The authors provide their e-mail addresses to allow direct contact between themselves and the readership, and there is also what sounds as if it is a ‘chat room’ called "Give and Take". A rather mysterious section is called "Ask the Expert" for worldwide use. No detail is given about who the experts are – or who decides who they are, or what they are experts in. It could be very interesting without strict editorial control! There are no clues in the journal as it does not have such a section in this first issue. There is a small reviews and abstracts section that gives a short critique of journal articles, picking from the Europ J Orthod, Brit J Orthod and the Australian Orthod J. This eclectic mixture may have derived from the editor of the section who is Ahmet Keles from Turkey. It is nice to think that orthodontics does exist outside America. They also promise a short article on orthodontics in a particular country – this issue features Vietnam.

The titles and authors are given below for a taster of the type of article that the journal carries. What niche does it fill? Well, it is a half-way house between the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics and any of the other more scientifically oriented journals. Will it survive? With Tom Graber's energy, enthusiasm and experience behind it, especially the latter, it certainly has a good start. However, time will tell – it is difficult to see who will submit articles to such a journal, unless they are solicited, and the author's instructions make no mention of payment to those whose submitted articles are published. The readership will be mainly active clinicians who seek a little more ‘meat’ than the JCO provides, but they are unlikely to submit papers. They may take the opportunity to enter correspondence with the author, and whilst this is a good idea in theory, the practice may prove tedious for the author.

If you wish to access the web page the address is not given! Perhaps you have to subscribe to be given the opportunity to even read the titles and abstract, but this seems to be a major flaw in what purports to be an interactive on-line journal.

The papers are:

Trying to get out of the 20th century: a partial translation of Emil Herbst's 1910 text.

S. D. Hanks.

The Herbst appliance: research-based updated clinical possibilities.

H. Pancherz, S. Ruf.

J. B. Cope, R. P. Harper.

B. Mollenhauer.

The Journal has received Issue 1, Volume 4, 2000 of the Russian Journal of Biomechanics.

It contains 13 articles in English with Russian abstracts. There are 3 articles of dental interest:

Application of biomechanical modelling to optimise construction of dental crowns, bridges and implants.

Stresses in a tooth restored by a veneer.

The role of mechanical factor in orthopedic treatment of congenital cleft palate in children.
