This is the first of a series of articles which have been written by well known academics to provide a succinct account of how to get to deal with issues such as: writing a clinical case report, giving a verbal presentation, searching the literature, interpreting the literature, writing protocols, questionnaires or carrying out randomized control trials. This information is not easily obtained from one source and this series should be of value to postgraduate students, researchers, teachers, as well as being of interest to most orthodontists. The first in the series by the Editor is timely and relevant as postgraduate students enter a new academic year, many with thoughts on generating a research project. Writing a protocol is a difficult exercise and this paper clearly guides researchers from all disciplines towards producing a succinct account of what they are examining, why, and how they are going to achieve it.
