Dear Sir,
I would like to support the technique applied by N. M. Bass in his current article. He proposes the use of the aesthetic horizontal reference line. The diagrams and illustrations were excellent in detailing the various procedures involved. The accurate use of the ideal natural head posture is time-consuming and not easy in a clinical environment. Patients tend to feel uneasy when photograph sessions are stressed upon them. Asking them to stand in specific positions is frustrating and tiring, leading to a lack of co-operation. As observed by most of us, even the frontal smile photograph is tensed and not natural in most instances.
This technique is simple and interesting. The aesthetic horizontal is easy to locate on the lateral cephalograms. However, the tracing procedure for lip position, horizontal position, and lower incisor position is time-consuming in the beginning when introduced to dental undergraduate students who are already over-burdened by the volumes of cephalometric analysis provided in text books.
The author provides a quick analysis of the patients facial profile. Clinically, it should be utilized and implemented. I would love to see clinically-orientated articles published in the Journal of Orthodontics, providing more information regarding soft tissue evaluation and diagnosis.
