Letter to the Editor

Roger Thomas

Dear Sir,

It was a great privilege and pleasure to be present when my old classmate, Kate Vig, delivered her Northcroft Memorial lecture — ‘Paradigm shifts in orthodontics: have they influenced clinical practice?’

It was such an elegant presentation by an equally elegant lady and one who has done so much to boost the reputation of British graduates in the USA.

It set me wondering why it is that so many of us clearly take so much enjoyment from our profession even at 40+ years on. The answer surely is the patients and the special bond we can form with them.

This was brought home to me early this year when I received a Valentine rose from a lady patient on the occasion of her Wedding Anniversary and a poem which I think says it all.

I thought your readers might like to share it with me. If health should permit, the special relationships we can form mean that the prospect of another 40 years need not cause any of us undue foreboding!
