John Brown

Dear Editor

I read the article on Twin-Block Re-activation by J. A. Brennan and S. J. Littlewood.1Go As a dental technician, I was concerned at the material selected for reactivating the twin-blocks. The authors selected Triad Custom Tray Material, which is designed for making custom trays. This material is used for temporary insertion into the oral cavity; for example, to transport the impression material to record an impression.

I have advised several orthodontists over the past five or more years on the use of light-cure material for reactivating twin-blocks using the technique published in this article. However, I always advised using Triad VLC TransSheet Material or Triad VLC Gel and associated products, as this technique is suitable for intra-oral use (see quote from DeguDent, below). The feedback I received from these orthodontists was that they were extremely happy with the technique, in both ease of use and time efficiency.

There also seems to be an anomaly in this article: the prices quoted are for the Triad VLC TransSheet Material, which is suitable for intra-oral use. I am concerned that the wrong message is being transmitted by this article to your readers, which is that they can use a material which may be unsuitable for continuous intra-oral use, i.e. Triad Custom Tray Material.

The following are statements from the DeguDent (Dentsply) website (emphasis added by author).2Go

Triad VLC Custom Tray Material: ‘[Has] set the standard for productive performance, i.e. superb adaptation, easy handling, stability and accuracy.’ (The website does not mention its uses, but it costs at least 70% less than material suitable for intra-oral use—listed next.)

Triad VLC TranSheet Material: ‘Is a pre-mixed sheet which is translucent when cured. TranSheet is ideal for orthodontic appliances of all types, removable prosthodontic appliances and many removable placement and fixation devices used in implant prosthodontics.’

Triad VLC Gel: ‘Is a ready-to-use, flowable VLC material available in four shades for orthodontic, implant and other removable appliances. Its unique handling properties can substantially reduce fabrication and finishing time.’
